    Transport horses for a living? A professional rider or show groom? Wanting a career in horse transport? As of January 2007, EU Welfare in transport Regulation No 1/2005 requires anybody who transports horses in connection with an economic activity (for business purposes) for over 8 hours to hold an Advanced Certificate in Equine Transport (ACET)/WATO (The Welfare of Animals (Transport) (England) Order 2006).

    How do I know if I need a certificate?

    In general, you will need a certificate if you are;
    • Transporting horses for hire or reward (for payment) on journeys of more than 65km or eight hours
    • Transporting horses for sale or to an abattoir for slaughter
    • Transporting horses as part of a business.
    The Certificate is a written and practical assessment covering 3 units.

    Unit 1 is a multiple choice paper which can be taken on paper or online and tests the candidate’s knowledge on;
    • Animal Welfare Legislations
    • Horse Health, Food, Rest and Water
    • Loading and unloading
    • Planning a Journey & Exceeding 8 hours
    • Health and Safety Regulations & Ability to Identify & Minimize Risk
    • Vehicle Travel Compartments & Use of Fittings & Partitions.
    Unit 2 is the first of 2 practical assessments, The Candidate will be asked to practically demonstrate:
    • preparing horses for transportation; applying travel clothing, fitting and use of a head collar and bridle, leading a horse in hand and checking horse to ensure they are fit to travel
    • loading, securing & unloading horses; Positioning ramp ready for loading and unloading, load horses, secure horse and partition, lift ramp and secure. The candidate will then be asked to unload the horses safely, check horses for injury and take the correct action if required, hand horses over to the entitled person or secure in stabling/accommodation if necessary.
    Unit 3 is the last unit, and second practical assessment where you will be asked to drive the transport
    vehicle, the candidate will be asked to practically demonstrate;
    • To Drive a vehicle transporting horses; you will need to Drive the vehicle to the agreed collection point, park the vehicle in a safe place for loading. The candidate will then be asked to manoeuver the vehicle in a safe manor with consideration to the surroundings, drive to a further agreed destination and again park the vehicle ready for safe unloading.
