Friesians are willing and people-oriented but their elevated action and natural carriage require a rider with an independent seat. The breed is prone to a skin condition called verrucous pastern dermatopathy, sometimes referred to as Friesian disease, which affects the lower legs and feathering. Ask for a full health history and include the lower legs in any vetting. UK prices typically start from around £5,000 for a young or unproven animal and rise significantly for licensed stallions and studbook-approved mares.

Choosing the right horse

When browsing Friesian Horses, match the horse to your experience, not just where you are now but where you want to be in the next year. A young or unschooled horse suits confident, experienced riders. If you're still developing, a well-schooled older horse will teach you more and carries less risk.
