Buying a Horsebox or Trailer

Weight categories and driving licences

The weight of a horsebox determines what licence you need to drive it. Up to 3.5 tonnes falls within a standard category B car licence, so no additional test is required. Between 3.6 and 7.5 tonnes you need C1 entitlement. If you passed your car test in the UK before January 1997 you may already hold C1 as a legacy right, so check the categories on your photocard before committing to a weight band. Horsebox or trailer?

A horsebox carries horses in the vehicle itself. A trailer is towed behind a suitable car or 4x4 and tends to be better value for occasional use, but the tow vehicle needs the right kerbweight and towing capacity for the trailer when loaded. A horsebox offers more independence, is typically easier for horses to load, and usually includes living accommodation for competitions and overnight stays.

What to look for

On older lorries, the body condition and chassis condition need to be assessed separately. A well-maintained coachbuild on a high-mileage chassis is common, so ask for full service history and check the MoT record. For any significant purchase, have the vehicle independently inspected by a qualified mechanic before committing.
