Horses Were Saved By Their Devoted Owners From The Floods Of Storm Callum

Amazing video footage has been released of two men saving their beloved horses when they became stuck in a flooded field during Storm Callum.

A nearby river, in Monmouthshire, burst its banks and left the horses almost fully submerged in brown murky waters. The storm was in full swing on Saturday as it took down may parts of Wales with floods and torrential rain.

The horse's owner Gareth Silcox was called to be made aware that his horses were in danger. He then made his way to the field in Gilwern and jumped in to save them, along with another man who helped him save his animals.

The pair swam across the waters which they couldn't stand in due to the depth and guided the horses back to safety.

Becky Eardley witnessed the incident, she lived nearby and used to keep her horses in the same field.

"When it started raining it took everyone by surprise," Becky said.

"The field is right next to a river, so when it burst its banks the field completely flooded."

"The farmer rang him at around 5 am to tell him the field was getting quite bad and he got down there as soon as he could," Becky said.

"I used to keep horses on the same field, so when I woke up in the morning and saw the weather I thought I'd take a walk down there, to make sure the horses were okay.”

“As I approached the field and saw the flooding, I thought - there's no way they could survive that if they were still there. Then I saw a 4x4 and trailer backed up onto the field. The men were swimming across the field. They couldn't touch the floor. It was amazing to watch - the men were very brave.”
