Horses Are Helping Children With Mental Health Issues

Hundreds of children across the country are working with horses to help them cope with their mental health issues.

This new and upcoming approach has improved children’s engagement in class and their ability to cope with stress and emotion.

The Strength and Learning Through Horses charity has seen a rocketing demand for its Equine Therapy sessions. The Equine Therapy sessions consist of children working with horses to develop their communication and team work skills.

The charity is now calling for their cost-effective method to be used as an early intervention to ease the strain on the NHS.

With many people suffering with mental health issues, this would be a great way to try and help those in need, before reaching out to the NHS.

Things as little as petting a horse can help stress levels decrease and create a calm environment whilst reducing anxiety.

22 year old, Natalie-Ann suffers from an anxiety disorder and autism. Before attending Equine Therapy sessions she refused to leave the house and struggled to communicate.

I felt like I was a waste of space in the world, like I had no opportunities for me, there was nothing that I was going to achieve - I was going to achieve absolutely nothing, but now I’ve achieved so much.

I’m a different person thanks to equine therapy, in a good way!

Since Natalie has been attending Equine Therapy sessions she has been working with Ghost, the horse, who has helped her improve immeasurably.

She has now passed her driving test, enrolled in college and has made new friends.
