Horse Was Desperately Asking For Help With 25 cm Of Bramble Wedged Under His Tongue

A horse who was found in a lot of pain is now recovering and starting a new life at Redwings Horse Sanctuary.

The horse is a 16-year-old cob named Boris. He was found in a terrible state, in a field in Essex. Boris was unable to eat or even open his mouth due to the
thorn covered stick that was wedged in the soft tissue beneath his tongue.

When Boris was found and assessed, he scored a body condition rating of 0 to 0.5 out of 5.

He was then taken immediately to House and Jackson Veterinary Clinic where the stick was carefully removed and his mouth was cleaned up.

The piece of bramble that was stuck in his mouth was measured at 25 cm long.

An owner is yet to come forward and claim Boris, so Redwings has now offered him a “safe forever home” at their base in Norfolk.

Senior field officer, Jo Franklin, from redwings said that Boris was in absolute agony when she first saw him.

“He wouldn’t open his mouth at first, even to take a slice of apple, but then he allowed me just enough of a glimpse to see the stick — it was like he was desperately asking for help, I usually try not to get upset, but to see a horse in so much pain was heartbreaking. The fact that this type of awful situation can so easily be prevented by regularly checking your horse makes it that much worse,”

“At the end of that day, I left the veterinary clinic with Boris in a warm stable, chewing away on some soft feed, and I thought, ‘this is why I do what I do.”

She added he will “never lack for love and care for the rest of his life”.
