Horse Named Logan Helps Save Kitten’s Vision

A horse named Logan, from Lincoln, helped to save a kitten’s life after its blood created an eye serum to cure the kitten's virus.

14-week-old kitten, Bravo, came to Fieldhaven Feline Center with a destructive virus and ulcer on his left eye. Bravo had already lost his right eye and veterinarians believe it was to the same cause, so they were eager to preserve his only eye.

“He developed a corneal ulcer – a painful ulceration on the outer most layer of the eye. And he only has one eye, so we wanted to preserve that one good eye,” said
Dr. Heather Kennedy, a veterinarian at the Feline Center.

Bravo was able to meet his donor who was a 1,200-pound horse named Logan Wednesday.

Typically the veterinarians would use a serum made from the animal’s own blood to cure the virus, but Bravo was too small to take blood from.

“Serum is one of the components of blood. We draw blood from an animal, spin it down to get serum, and we use that as an eye drop,” Kennedy said.

Joy Smith, the founder of Fieldhaven Feline Center heard that Bravo needed a blood donation and stepped
in to volunteer Logan to donate blood to create the serum.

“Horses and cats really do go together,” said Smith. “…Of course, a horse has gallons of blood so we had plenty of blood. And so they took the blood, spun it down and treated the blood and treated the eye with the serum and as you can tell it’s doing really well.”

Now that Bravo is on the mend the pair
have become rather fond of each other and are proving to be quite the dynamic duo, no matter the size difference.
