Here is some more information about Lucky the Skewbald Cob:
There have been so many responses to the advert I put out last Saturday – inundated is an understatement.
So here is some more info and a few pics. (I had loads of pics and videos but my computer broke down in Feb and I have lost just about everything – am trying to get it back.)
From an animal welfare point of view I would say Lucky can carry up to 12 st.
He’s had his legs clipped this morning and was re-hogged, so looking very smart. He particularly enjoyed the ‘molasses lick’ the clipper provided (and me singing to him, of course). He tends to get itchy feathers, so this needs to be kept up to. He has some arthritis in his front forelimbs (DJD) – he has a prescription for bute – as and when. He was a lovely jumper a few years ago, but I don’t think it’s fair for him to be jumped because of the arthritis. He has shoes on his front feet – gives him a bit more support. If you want to hack him out on roads he may need shoes on the back feet as well.
All his dental work is up to date – so , regularly rasped.
Lucky likes people a lot, especially when they give him a lot of loving attention. He’s not quite as keen on other horses. He can tolerate them on a ride (in a lesson) or out on a hack. But he prefers to have a paddock to himself – has shared before, but really, pretty happy on his own, munching grass and mooching about.
Lucky is not a ‘plodder’ – he has a personality (when he’s not eating!) He does need his jockey/handler to be assertive – he weighs 500 kilos, so it’s important to keep the upper hand when bringing him in/putting him out. He needs you to take control and make him feel safe. As a rider you need to support him with your leg aides and keep little squeezes down the reins so he’s listening to you. I’m not sure Lucky is going to benefit an anxious rider (unless it’s in supervised lessons in a riding school). If you’re anxious, he’ll be anxious and then neither of you will be happy.
I hope that this answers some of your questions about him. I will be planning visits/viewings in the near future.
I look forward to meeting you if you’re still interested.
