An Interview With Horse Whisperer Carol Sharpe - Nihi, Sumba
News & Events Interviews
Believed to be the Home Farm for Alder Hall the ancestral home of the Charnock family which dates back to the 16thcentury, Alder Hall Farm is a beautiful building set in seven acres presenting a first class equestrian opportunity, and is a home to cherish and be cherished by in turn.
The original stone built farmhouse with exposed beams has been extended to provide extensive family accommodation and the land, well stocked lake, and outbuildings provide a wonderful amenity.
The approach is along a hedge lined country lane in the heart of Lancashire. Turn into the courtyard with plenty of parking for vehicles from cars to horse boxes and stroll over to the main entrance which leads you straight in to the heart of the house. The dining kitchen was designed and fitted by Matthew Marsden and comprises solid wood doors, granite work surfaces and the space for appliances you would expect including an electric Aga and waste disposal unit.
To one side, the snug benefits from an open fire and has access to the sun terrace. To the other the large boot room has separate external access, tiled flooring, space, power and plumbing for other appliances and houses the central heating boiler. It is the perfect place to wash down those muddy boots and children before you let them into the house. Leading off is a shower room and a large ground floor bedroom with views over the garden.
Completing the ground floor is a wonderful signature room with oak beams, substantial baronial style fireplace and views out over the gardens and countryside beyond, the perfect place for entertaining friends and family and opening on to the terrace for those sunny afternoons.
To the first floor, the master suite has separate dressing room leading to the spacious en suite with fully tiled flooring and elevations, free standing bath and walk in rainfall shower. There are two further double bedrooms and the family bathroom.
Stepping outside is an equal pleasure as Alder Hall Farm is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and, in its own grounds, a large paddock with separate gated entrance, informal gardens and closer to the house beautiful landscaping. The terrace faces almost due south and from there you can watch and hear the waterfall run down its rocky course with abundant planting all the way down to the lake. There is nothing like messing about on water and this lake is well stocked with fish and has a jetty so you can ease yourself out on to the still, calm surface.
There are numerous outbuildings from a tractor store near the paddock, to a wonderful combination of garaging, workshop and a first floor room which currently houses a full size snooker table, games tables and gym equipment and makes a fantastic studio. Finally, there is a wood store and boat house.
This house is built around enjoyment, relaxation and entertainment and has been lovingly extended and developed by its current owners to provide just that. It is now ready for the next chapter in its history to begin.
What the vendor has to say:
Nestled in just over seven acres of rolling grounds, and surrounded by a glorious patchwork of open farmland is Alder Hall Farm, a hugely characterful four-bedroom farmhouse that has been both greatly enlarged and beautifully refurbished by the current owners. “We’d been looking for a new family home for some time when, quite by chance, my husband happened upon Alder Hall Farm,†says the owner. “It was definitely in need of improvement, but he could immediately see its potential, and over time we’ve added to it and added to it, realised its potential and transformed it into the beautiful home it is today.â€
“The house is now a lot bigger than it was originally and so it’s perfect for both busy family life and entertaining, but something that was really important to us was to keep its wonderful sense of character and charm. During the renovations we restored and enhanced all of the original features including the lovely old beams and the rather impressive stone fireplace in the lounge, and then in the sunroom, which is in the newer section of the house, we carried that country theme through by adding more exposed beams and a huge inglenook. It’s without doubt a very big house with a tremendous feeling of light and space throughout, but those features combine to give it a really homely feel.â€
“One of the many things that attracted us to the property when we initially came across it was the fantastic amount outside space,†continues the owner. “Our children had always wanted ponies and here we had more than enough room to keep them. Over time we’ve developed the land, creating pretty gardens, a lake and a stream so there are lots of lovely places to sit out, relax and soak in those views, and it’s also a real haven for wildlife. It really is an exceptionally beautiful place to call home, and it’s also been an idyllic place for the children and now the grandchildren to enjoy.â€
Favourite room: “The signature room is without doubt the sunroom. It’s triple aspect so even on the dullest day it’s wonderfully light and bright, and the huge windows beautifully frame the views.â€
Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: "Within he house and grounds we've been able to enjoy utter peace and seclusion, but we've never felt as if we're isolated. We have a number of well-served towns and villages within easy reach and there are also some good schools in the local area so it's a great place to bring up a family."
Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): “Above the triple garage we created a huge games room for the children. It’s a fantastic space, and very flexible in terms of how it can be used.â€
What they’ll miss most / why they are leaving: “The house has been the most wonderful home and the real hub of family life, but it will be this exceptional setting that I’ll miss most,†says the owner. “The simple pleasure of being surrounded by so much beautiful countryside while enjoying total and utter peace and tranquillity has been an absolute joy. It’s a little slice of paradise.â€
