Implications for every horse owner, as paralysed teenager wins £3m

Ashleigh Harris, who was 14 at the time of the incident has won a £3 million legal battle against her ex-boyfriend's family.

Ms Harris who is now 18, fell off after being encouraged to ride Polly Perks, a "badly trained" thoroughbred ex-racehorse. The fall broke her back and left her paralysed from the waist down.

In court, it became clear that Ms Harris was new to horse riding, and that Polly was too feisty and unsuitable to have been used for her level.

43-year-old Rachel Miller, the owner of the horse has been ordered by a judge to pay £3 million in compensation.

Judge Graham Wood QC ruled that Ms Miller made a “serious error of judgment in acquiring an unsuitable horse at the early stages of her riding hobby”.

Unfortunately, it looks like the ruling may have repercussions for all those who own horses according to equine law expert Caroline Bowler

“It’s going to make anyone who owns a horse think twice before allowing friends or family members to ride them. It has set a precedent and I think people will be more minded to pursue claims,” Ms Bowler added
