Horses Could Be Banned From the Beaches On The Isle Of Wight And Dogs From Designated Areas.

New proposals from the Isle Of Wight Council could see dogs banned from cemeteries and horses banned from riding on the beach between certain times.

The new rules around dogs are aimed at preventing dogs from fouling, however, if owners are visiting a grave or they are guide dogs then they would be allowed in.

Secondly, horse riding on the beaches could also be banned between 10 am and 6 pm.

The two new proposals are extremely controversial among members of the public.

At a meeting with the Isle of Wight Council on Monday 5th November, Jim Moody explained to members of the council that preventing dog owners from walking their pets in sacred grounds would be 'a blow' for them.

"Just because some dog owners fail in their duty to clean up after their pets is no reason to collectively punish all dog owners who use the cemetery."

Julian Critchley also commented on the second proposal and said that the horses being ridden across the beaches is a ‘beautiful sight’.

Tim Wakeley added that the horses being able to run across the stunning beaches is a major selling point for stables on the Isle of Wight who are aiming to attract tourists.

He said: "This is a blunt instrument."

Members of the council came to the conclusion that the council needed to consult members of the public on the Isle of Wight about the current proposals and they should then be discussed at the next planning committee.

Wakeley added: "We need to make sure it is applicable and enforceable."

A consultation on the new suggestions will take place will take place early next year.
