Please do not DM/PM or leave comments, this post is for your information and IMHO is very complete and honest!
The pony is located in Mid Devon.
We are selling our fab pony Kevin (Mr Bumble) who has been there done it all and got the rosettes. Kev is a 17 year old 14.2hh Connemara X. We bought him in July 2015 for my daughter who was then 12 years old as a mother daughter share. We were both coming off riding school ponies and wanted a safe experienced pony to bring our riding skills on. He has been perfect for the job.
He is for sale due to no fault of his own and has been a really, really tough decision for us but unfortunately, my daughter is now starting her GCSE’s and she does not have enough time to give to him. He is very experienced at what he does and is still young enough to continue doing what he loves best – jumping and competing at his current level. Unfortunately, I do not have the time and am not the person to do this with him and therefore unfair on him for me to retire him to a hacking pony.
He is very experienced in all disciplines but not a push button/point and shoot pony. He can be very forward going at times in open spaces but very honest and safe, he does however require a confident rider. For this reason he is better suited as a 2nd pony for a teenager looking to progress and be competing at 80cm plus. Prior to us owning him, Kevin was competing at 1m and had a more experienced rider so he had to take a step back to accommodate us which he did so patiently jumping at 60cm to begin with, he’s now back to height. I would prefer him not to take that step back again to accommodate the less experienced rider and would love to find a rider who wants to have fun and compete him at his current level.
Although he is a 2nd pony he is currently giving lessons to boys aged 6 and 7 who are beginners at our current yard. I cannot emphasise enough how patient, genuine and safe Kev really is which is what any mother wants. He really looks after them in the school in all three paces and little and hacks in walk and trot both on and off the lead rein.
With us he has done Riding Club, all Pony Club activities and camps; my daughter was jumping him at 1m XC and SJ all of which he has been jumping with ease. XC Hunter Trials, 15 mile fun rides, NSEA competitions Eventers Challenge 80-85cm where he qualified for the Championships at Hickstead in May 2018. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his day and he got a knock down. As he was competing against the best of the best it was not good enough to be placed. He dealt with the 6 hour journey on his own each way so patiently. He is nearly always placed in local SJ and XC competitions. Very quick off the clock and great in speed rounds.
Dressage is not mine or my daughters forte but with the three tests we have done with him we have got over 60% and qualified for Cricklands. He is very well schooled and with the right rider he could do a lovely dressage test but jumping is his favourite.
My daughter has taken him hunting before but he has no hunting etiquette and thinks it’s a race! He would need an experienced rider to take him hunting as can be strong and excitable.
He is 100% safe on the ground, clip, load, travel, catch, shoe, around dogs, sheep, traffic, tractors never kicks or bucks, hacks alone and in company, if in company prefers to lead the way.
Big rocks on the side of the road can spook him a little nothing nasty just gives them a “wide berth” occasionally needs a little reassurance from rider that they are not going to attack him!
The only vice he has is crib biting after meals but it’s easily prevented and managed. He can live in or out. For the first 2 years of us owning him he was out 24/7 on 40 acres with 15+ others and no problems at all. He will stick up for himself if bullied as he would prefer to be left alone and graze. We moved yards where he has his own stable and turned out with 3 other horses. He dealt with moving yards and new surroundings excellently as if he has always been there. He did suffer with grade 1 and 2 ulcers in June 18. He was not ridden and medicated and after a month they had gone. After not being ridden for a month he did go a bit stiff which was investigated by the vet. He failed the flexion test on left hind and it was decided to inject the hocks to alleviate any discomfort. Last vet assessment was January 19 in respect of his hocks and she is happy with his progress. Only advice given is to keep him in regular work making sure he is working and engaging from behind. I am not the right rider to do this with him as I work full time and cannot invest the time he needs to be ridden regularly. It is for this reason we are being forced to sell him so he can continue doing the things he enjoys.
Up to date with vaccinations, worming, back checks, teeth, saddle checks. Home is more important than price as Kev is the most loyal and honest pony I have ever known and deserves to best. Price to include professionally fitted tack – all rugs and additional belongings under separate negotiation.
