Electrolytes are the salts found within the horses body and are required for a variety of functions including, maintaining amounts of water within cells, blood pH, and muscle action. As a horse exercises and sweats, electrolytes are lost, especially potassium and sodium. If Electrolyte replenishment is not addressed, fluid electrolyte levels become imbalanced, and this may lead to serious physiological problems. Electrolyte Supplements are balanced products containing vital salts lost in sweat.

Horses and Ponies in light work only lose small amounts of electrolytes, and it may be sufficient to supplement the diet with rock salt. However, many horses have higher requirement than that provided by plain salt, and are working at levels that result in larger electrolyte losses. It is of particular importance during winter months, when the weather is cooler, that the horses in medium to hard work are still supplemented with electrolytes.
