Horse Guides – Ask the Expert

clairel15 asks:
How often should I be worming my horse? Can you underworm/overworm? Does the size of my horse determine how often I should be worming?
How often should I be worming my horse? Can you underworm/overworm? Does the size of my horse determine how often I should be worming?

Worming should be undertaken relative to the age, weight & condition of your horse, alongside the environment in which your horse is kept.

All wormers, like any other drug should be administered accurately to the weight of the horse. If you under estimate the weight, then you would be under dosing and the effects of this are twofold.

1.      Your horse is not receiving the correct dose and the drug could be not fully effective.

2.      Under dosing increases the risk of worms developing resistance to the drug itself. As we only have a few drug types available for horses in this country, resistance is a significant threat to every horse owner. You should use a weigh tape or weighbridge to establish the weight of your horse at the time of year you are going to worm.

Good advice is to establish an accurate weight for your horse and remember this will vary throughout the year based on condition and the season.

How often you worm should be based on the type of wormer you used last and the threat of worm infection for your horse. Ie if you use an Equest Pramox or Equest Gel, then you would not expect to worm again for another 13 weeks. However if you use a simple Ivermectin wormer, you would potentially need to worm again in 8 – 10 weeks. If you have a horse that only ever grazes on its own, has plenty of space and your field is poo picked daily, then you may find you have a very low worm risk and less frequent worming could be considered. Alternatively if you are in a mixed grazing environment with new horses coming and going all the time then the risk is greater as is the need for more regular worming.

In all cases you should seek the advice of your vet or an SQP such as ourselves at Wormerclub. Please feel free to call on 0333 600 6101 and we would be delighted to discuss your horses specific needs and establish if you need to worm and the best product available. Worming planners are also available on our website for you to view or download at www.wormerclub.co.uk.
