Woman to run marathon for her horse and World Horse Welfare

Woman to run marathon for her horse and World Horse Welfare

Sue Hudson from North Wales is to run the 2012 Brighton Marathon to raise money for World Horse Welfare, Liverpool University and the Equine Grass Sickness fund.

Sue’s horse Baz, who she rehomed from World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in 2006, was diagnosed with Chronic Grass Sickness in 2010.

Baz became unwell after completing a 30 mile endurance ride. Sue and Baz were referred to Liverpool University’s Leahurst Equine Hospital.

Baz, an eight-year-old 14 hand chestnut gelding, received a bad prognosis at first but has been doing really well.

Sue told World Horse Welfare: “I couldn’t believe what I was being told as I knew how serious the disease can be as many horses don’t recover and have to be put to sleep once they have it.

“However, Baz has been doing really well and has gradually regained his weight. Despite some setbacks his immune system seems to be getting stronger. At the moment he’s progressed from having short walks in hand to starting out again with gentle ridden work to try and build up his muscle tone.”

Sue chose to enter the 2012 Brighton Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 15 April 2012, to raise funds to help research into equine diseases and for World Horse Welfare.

Despite not being a natural runner, Sue is determined to complete the Brighton Marathon and raise as much money as she can.
