A graphic undercover video from the Humane Society in the US has led to charges being brought against Jackie McConnell, a top trainer in the Tennessee walking horse industry.
It is alleged that McConnell and his stable hands have been subjecting horses to practices banned 40 years ago.
McConnell has been charged with 52 counts of violation of the Horse Protection Act and has pleaded guilty to one, CNN reports.
The video allegedly shows horses being subjected to ‘soring’ – an illegal process which involves chemicals being applied to a horse’s lower legs to induce the gait that Tennessee walking horses are known for: the ‘big lick’. The Humane Society video also allegedly shows horses being struck with sticks.
The case is ongoing.
