Horsemart Young Riders Fund: meet the latest young riderWednesday 28 March 2012
Every few months Horsemart supports a young rider hoping to make it to the top of their chosen equestrian field through the Place an ad Young Riders Fund.
The latest young rider to be supported by the scheme is Vicki Casey, a competition rider from York, who has been awarded £352 to help her achieve her dreams.
Meet Vicki Casey Vicki began riding when she was just 18-months-old, on a pony bought for her by her mother – a pony which lived to the ripe old age of 42. Vicki was influenced by her mother’s passion for eventing and has competed both unaffiliated andaffiliated many times.
A determined rider, Vicki nurtured a 14.2hh eight-year-old cob bought with a ‘fund’ left to her by her late Grandfather. Mickey was a nervous rescue horse, and although for the first four months Vicki was disappointed by his refusal to jump and tense dressage, she didn’t give up. Vicki carried on with Mickey and he eventually developed into a novice event pony.
Unfortunately, since then, Mickey went lame. After a year off, however, and as determined as ever, Vicki and Mickey will be starting again.
Whilst Mickey was out, Vicki bought a young 15.3hh horse, Apollo. Vicki says Apollo has turned out to be an amazing horse with a lot to give. Since applying for the Horsemart.co.uk Young Riders Fund, Apollo is now running at novice level, having finished 9th, 6th and 10th in five runs last year. He has also won his first two British novices.
Vicki has also since been given, Rolo, a beautiful 17hh warmblood, who is now 13-years-old having been a dressage horse his entire life.

Vicki is hoping to event Rolo this year, although she says he has taken more of a shine to jumping than he has flat!
Vicki says that the money awarded to her by the Horsemart Young Riders Fund will go towards her training, and will allow her to really crack on this season. She says that she would love to spend some time with a top rider like Oliver Townend and has 110% faith in her horses.
Update
We recently received an email from Vicki, letting us know how she has put her award from the Horsemart Young Riders Fund to good use.
Thanks to the fund, Vicki has been able to afford more lessons with Heidi Woodhead at DHI Event Horses. She has also finished in a respectable 10th place on her first run with Brendonhill Giltedge at Oasby and qualified for a novice regional final – the 1.10m Trailblazers second round. Vicki has also won her last two dressage tests. Looking forward, Vicki will be moving up a level in British Eventing at Eland Lodge on Saturday 14 April 2012.
