Horse trading now allowed in restricted form at Lammas Fair

Horse trading now allowed in restricted form at Lammas Fair

For 400 years the buying and selling of horses has taken place on the streets at Ballycastle's Old Lammas Fair, however, earlier in the year councillors banned the tradition. This decision was made following concerns over safety and animal welfare, however, Moyle District Council has overturned the ban, allowing horse trading to take place at this year’s event.

There will be restrictions, though, as both sides of the argument have compromised. The trading will now take place in a specific area that will be known as the Fair Green.

According to the BBC, the  tethering of animals on Fairhill Street, or any running of horses on the public road, will be banned.

Horse trader Vincent Traynor told the BBC that people who want to buy a horse will still want to see them run up the street.

He said the new rules will have little impact.

"Come the fair day the people who know what they're doing, or know how to sell their horse, they'll do it anyway," Mr Traynor said.

The 2012 fair will be held on 27 and 28 August.

A pony show that had been planned to replace the horse trading has been cancelled.
