Holger Wulschner wins Grand Prix of the Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken& Edward Gal does it again Thursday 25 February 2010 A very special win - Holger Wulschner wins Grand Prix of the Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken
Neumünster – Until the last minute he feared and didn’t rely on anything, it was only when Markus Renzel, winner of the Mercedes-Benz Cup on Saturday, left the arena with a jumping error, that Holger Wulschner turned really happy. The professional from Groß Viegeln near Rostock, won the Grand Prix, with the Holsteiner stallion Cefalo, endowed with 38.000 euros of the Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken, and all this without a jump-off, because the 45-year-old was the only competitor with a clear round.
Nobody could remember if this has ever happened before in Neumünster. Paul Schockemöhle said: "I haven’t heard anything of it during the past 30 years." There would have almost been a jump-off, if Mathijs van Aasten from the Netherlands hadn’t been a bit too slow with his horse Chester. Due to a penalty for exceeding the time aloud the Nations Cup rider prevented a jump-off.
Fascination in black – Totilas
Totilas, a ten-year-old son of the Trakehner stallion Gribaldi and Edward Gal (Netherlands) won the World Cup freestyle in the price of the VR Bank and the
Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall and also the hearts of the audience in Neumünster. The visitors of the VR Classics rewarded the duo with standing ovations immediately after the end of the freestyle.
Edward Gal particularly liked Neumünster: "The audience is incredible and you feel very welcome in Germany," a sentence which was picked up by the third-placed team Olympic champion Isabell Werth: "I have been here a few times before, but it is always something special." The most successful German dressage rider was dissapointed about a mistake in a lead change, but was pleased with the mature "Hannes ". Each of the 15 riders in the World Cup freestyle was celebrated like a hero.
Between Edward Gal with Totilas and Isabell Werth with the Hanoverian chestnut "Hannes" the Dutch Adelinde Cornelissen and Parzival were placed second.
Gal is now the leader in the current World Cup ranking with 75 points, in front of Werth, who is placed behind Matthias Rath (Kronberg) and in front of Monica Theodorescu (Sassenberg) placed seventh. The incredible starting lists in the dressage influenced the number of visitors greatly. For the 60th VR Classics edition the three Holstenhallen were visited by almost 36.000 visitors in four days to see dressage riders and show jumpers from 21 nations fighting for a total of 200.000 euros in prize money.
