Getting to know Phoebe BuckleyThursday 05 May 2011
Talent event rider, Phoebe Buckley, from East Anglia, has recently secured sponsorship from Hallmarq MRI equine scanners. Coming from a non-horsey family with no financial backing, Phoebe left school at 13-years-old to pursue a career as an event rider and has never looked back. She took time out of her busy schedule to reveal how the hard she trains, and an insight into her life.
What got you interested in Eventing: Working for the event rider Tanya Kyle as a youngster
Biggest achievement so far: Winning the CCI*** at Bramham Horse Trials on The Busker
How many horses do you ride per day: 10 horses
Tell us about your memorable horses: There are lots! My wonderful Young Riders horse, the Busker, really got me where I am today. I always say that he taught me to always go the straight route and I try to carry that on with my young horses even today. Little Tiger is a wonderful example of how a horse with heart can go all the way – she may never lead the dressage but I wouldn’t sit on anything else going XC!
Which top horse do you most admire: Pippa Funnell’s lovely horse Redesigned, he’s such a gorgeous horse that when I watch him I am sick with envy!
What is your worst fall? Undoubtedly tipping up with Little Tiger at Burghley 2010, my first ever horse fall and hopefully my last
What safety advice would you give to riders for cross country? There are a lot more badly ridden cross country fences than there are badly built fences. Sit up, kick on and be positive – you’ll be a safer rider for it.
Have you got any competition superstitions? None! The harder I work, the luckier I get!
Do you have other interests: I love to follow racing and I’m quite the closet cook - I can do a mean lamb shank in my lorry oven! I also secretly enjoy playing Sonic the Hedgehog computer games…
Favorite meal: Chilli con Carne
Do you have any pets: My dog, ComeOn!
Favourite TV programme: Top Gear!
Favourite album – Pass, let’s not reveal my hideous taste in music!
What is your daily routine: Each day I try to be on the yard early, to help muck out, then throughout the day I’ll ride 10 horses, this can involving working on the flat, jumping or training on the cross country course nearby. Whilst keeping the yard smart and tidy. I also enter competitions, and plan training sessions.
