Four legs beats two in annual man versus horse race

Four legs beats two in annual man versus horse race

The 25th annual Man versus Horse race took place on Saturday and once again it was the horse that came out victorious.

Over 300 solo runners; 100 relay teams of three and 50 horses took part in the event which took place in Llanwrtyd Wells.

The race runs over 22 miles and takes runners and riders through country lanes and off road terrain in the Powys countryside. Despite all their efforts none of the two legged entrants could beat Beti Gordon riding Next in Line Grangeway.

Next in Line Grangeway crossed they finish line in 2hr 8m 37s and the first runner crossed the line 17 minutes later.

The first runner to make it home was Charlie Pearson from London and the first female runner to finish was Jenny Horne from Aberystwyth, who made it in two hours and 46 minutes.

A human entrant has only ever won the event twice, in 2004 and 2007.

The race was heavily effected by the rain and organiser Tony Egan told the
BBC that the ground was "soft and squidgy in places".

However he went on to say: "They said they had a great time. It's good to see how popular it is."

The winner received a cup and 1,000 guineas, however in 2004 Huw Lobb won £25,000 after becoming the first human victor.
