A bond between a mother and it’s child is magical and unbreakable, however for one foal who was born 2 weeks early, who found himself motherless due to complications during his birth was at the risk of never having that connection.

Foals so young raised by humans are at risk of developing behavioural issues and other health problems. One veterinarian had an idea, Dr Patrick Brogan, who specialises in horse reproduction, wanted to involve another mare, however, this in itself was potentially dangerous to the young foal.

Zindita,The mare in question had also given birth to her foal too early, it was stillborn. Dr Brogan described how she was devastated, but speculated that Zindita would still be a suitable nurse mare to the other foal. However, there were chances the mare would reject the foal and act aggressive towards him.

Brogan decided to go ahead with the idea, and it went better than anyone could have dreamed of “It’s quite uncommon for the mare to accept the foal with such enthusiasm and love,” Brogan said. “Zindita fell in love with the foal straight away.”
