Top riders from all over the country converged on Grange Farm, Wittering to compete in this year’s Lincoln JumpCross Eventers Challenge.
With a £3,000 first prize at stake and other substantial prizes to sixth place providing an £8,500 prize fund kindly donated by Lincoln horse health products, the field included eventing stars Mark and Tanya Kyle, Oliver Townend, Piggy French, Clayton Fredericks and Matthew Wright.
In a close run competition, the winner’s purse fell to Fiona Hobby and Royal Colours with the talented 11-year-old just gaining the lead over Robin Dunlop’s well designed track that featured water crossings, combinations and joker fences allowing riders to improve their score at the very end of the round.
Fiona said: “It was a great competition and a wonderful day. The prize money is excellent and I couldn’t be more pleased. Royal Colours is a careful horse and loved the track. JumpCross is a brilliant sport.
“The course was well designed and required the rider to really think about the approach to fences and the speed you were travelling at.”
Riders took part in a two round competition, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with the scores from both rounds combining together to determine the winners.
Oliver Townend riding Pepper Anne finished second after two good rounds. Oliver is a regular at the Lincoln JumpCross Challenge and this time he managed to scoop the £2,250 second place prize.
Oliver said: “The course provided a great opportunity to tackle a number of water crossings and was very well thought out. Pepper Anne went really well and it was a great day all round.”
Third place went to Zoe Adams and Satonamillion with the pair putting in a good performance to pick up £1,500 in prize money and go one place better than in 2011.
Robin Dunlop of JumpCross said: “The Lincoln JumpCross Eventers Challenge is now well established in the calendar. It was a great day, with top class competition and we are very grateful for the support from Lincoln.”
Also running as part of the day was the JumpCross Young Rider Challenge, supported by Lincoln horse health products, with a £1,000 prize purse at stake.
Young riders competing at JumpCross sites all over the country had qualified to take part with the eventual first place going to Rachel Dinwoodie and Ringwood Abi.
Stamford-based Rachel said: “It was a bit touch and go up to the final, as Abi had to have some time-off with a septic foot, but thankfully she came right in the last 10 days so I was able to start riding her again.
“To win the £350 first prize was just amazing and I would like to thank the organisers for putting on such a brilliant competition.”
To add to Rachel’s success she also won the Lincoln JumpCross Team Challenge when her score was added to that of her celebrity partner, Daniel Delsart to run out the winners and take home even more prizes.
Jim Bowen, Managing Director of Battles, said: “The Lincoln JumpCross Eventers Challenge was a fantastic day and we are really pleased to be able to give something back to our customers. This is our fourth year supporting the event and we look forward to it being an annual event.”
