Ulrik Molgaard produced one of the best performances of the 2009 British Dressage Winter Championships on Nicky Golding’s eight-year-old Oldenberg gelding Herman TG to win the Biotal Medium Open Championship with a superb score of 73.24%.

The 17.1hh black gelding proved too big for his owner and when his previous rider fell off him and broke his wrist the horse was sent to Ulrik as a five year old. The Oxfordshire based rider was delighted with his win and said: “It means a lot to me because it is difficult enough to qualify for the championships. It is also good to keep my owners happy and to encourage new owners to send me horses.”

The British Dressage Winter Championships took place at Hartpury Arena in Gloucestershire from the 9th-12th April 2009. This was the seventh year that leading biotechnology company Biotal Ltd has sponsored the Medium Championships. An initial entry of 85 was narrowed down through a series of regional finals to a total of 21 combinations from all over the UK.

Warwickshire rider Sharon Boyd enjoyed the highlight of her riding career to date by winning the Biotal Medium Restricted Championship on her own 12-year-old chestnut Valentino Toftebjerg with a score of 67.13%. Sharon has owned the Danish warmblood gelding for six years and has transformed him from a “wilful and naughty” six-year-old into her “horse of a lifetime.”

“Although ‘Vinnie’ is well behaved at home and doesn’t bat an eyelid at my three young children racing around on their quad bikes and ponies, he does have a few quirks,” explained a delighted Sharon. “He dislikes travelling alone so my son’s 11.1hh pony accompanies him to competitions, which made a lot of people smile at the Winter Championships. I would like to thank Biotal for their generous sponsorship of the competition and the wonderful prizes.”

Ali Howe, Equine Brand Manager from Biotal Ltd commented: “Biotal is delighted to continue its support of the Medium Winter Championships. We understand how much work is involved in training horses to this standard and keeping them in peak condition. Biotal is committed to improving equine health through its range of supplements and our dressage sponsorship helps us to spread an important health message as well as support some of the UK’s most talented riders.”
