Best horse poems: Another Felbridge Sunday

By David Tucker
Best horse poems: Another Felbridge Sunday

Horse lover and rider, David Tucker, shares his poem ‘Another Felbridge Sunday’ below...

We walk through the gate, My horse takes a blow,
The bell is rung! It’s time to go,
I’ll start her slow, just sit back and squeeze,
We circle the ground and just this once please,
Let’s not stop or run out the side.
We’ll jump them all, my horse replied,

Look for the first; it’s a 90 of planks.
Three of them, standing straight up their ranks!
Canter round steady, we’re on the right lead
Now turn to the jump and clear it I plead!
But the sound of wood is all I hear.
Did we jump it? Did we clear?

Don’t! Look back, the teachers all said
Now look for the next it’s a Metre spread,
And so over we go, now jumping high
But we’ve landed awkward and twisted awry,
Yet again my fault, just couldn’t resist
I had to look back! It caused us to twist

“We’re still all clear”! I should trust my horse
Forgive me” Dixie”, now let’s ride this course,
Over the next, just don’t look down,
Let’s keep it straight, leg on! Get round,
The double is next, with a stride in between
We’re jumping now! She’s a flying machine!

Over the fifth and turn the right way, left leg down,
And I push her around.
Six, and seven, then eight go by,
and we’re in the jump off, so it’s time to fly,
just try to keep calm as we’ve been here before.
Don’t blow it now as over the next we soar!

Tight turn on the next and we can cut inside
This sets us up nice, to get the right stride
Now over the next, we’re in full flow
A nice tight turn and just a couple to go
The penultimate fence we’re over and done
Then the last we jump but the top pole has spun!

Stay in the cups I think and pray
I still see it move as I ride away
now at the exit, we wait to hear
Breathless and hot but were we clear?
“Dawn” let’s us out and flashes a smile
“Well done” she says you were clear by a mile!
