Alarming pictures of ‘collapsed’ horse sparks public outrage

Campaigners for animal rights have urged an appeal after this shocking image of an ‘exhausted’ horse collapsed on the ground was released.

Witnesses reported that the horse was crashed out on the ground breathing worryingly heavily in New York’s famous Central Park.

One of the groups campaigning to put an end to horse drawn carriages in Central Park - NYCLASS; claim the photo was taken after the horse had ‘collapsed’.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Horses don’t just collapse, something happened and the city should get to the bottom of it and make sure it never happens again".

He added: “They should conduct an immediate investigation into the health and whereabouts of this horse, including allowing an independent vet to examine the animal.”

Chris Emanus, the carriage driver for the 13 year old horse justified the incident by saying the horse had just ‘slipped’. "The day it happened, he tripped on a little crack in the pavement, " he said to the New York Post.

"That happens sometimes, they trip on a crack. He tripped and went down, but not hard.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and it doesn’t happen that often, but it does happen."

Christina Hansen, another spokeswoman for the carriage company has blamed the campaigners for making “something out of nothing.”

“The horse tripped and fell, and he was examined by three mounted officers at the park and was cleared to return to the stable pending a vet exam,” she told the Post. “He was found to be completely uninjured and absolutely fine.” she stated.

The owner added: “He had no scratches, no nothing. I’ve been doing this for 20 years. I’m one person who doesn’t take any chance with my horse, none whatsoever.”

New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene later confirmed that  the horse was back to normal and doing fine after the fall. In a statement they added “On February 21 we were notified by the NYPD that a carriage horse, Max, had tripped and fallen in Central Park,"

“The horse returned immediately to its stable and was examined by a private veterinarian who determined Max to be healthy." They said.

Here at Horsemart, we wish Max is full recovery and hope no more incidents like these crop up in the future.
