Top tips for breeding a Show Pony

If you’re wanting to breed a show pony read our top tips. Firstly DO think and decide what it is you are wanting the end result to be - what HEIGHT and what CLASS you are wanting it to become and whether to be a Show Pony / Hunter pony, performance /sports pony etc.

Then please remember what a long-term commitment it is from conception, to birth - almost one year later, to being four-years-old to ride!

• Showing your youngster in the in-hand breeding classes can be fun and good education IF NOT overdone!
• YOUR MARE should be of a good temperament and sound conformation, correct movement and preferably of good breeding herself. Not just bred from because she won't do anything else!!
• CHOOSE a STALLION who has successful offspring to his credit, and you like the look of his stock. Try to complement your mare by choosing a sire which will add to something she may be lacking.

When buying a foal

• Check that it is the right HEIGHT for the class.
• Very correct conformation and action according to Type (ie: Show Pony should have a long sweeping movement from the shoulder and a more 'rounder workmanlike action' for the Hunter pony).
• Good Temperament.
• Clean limbs free from having had Laminitis.
• Check past record.
• Any top Pony needs great 'PRESENCE' and a 'LOOK at Me' attitude and MUST HAVE QUALITY and preferably of good breeding.
