New Foresters Info
Ponies for Sale - New Forest Pony Guide
As the name suggests, the New Forest pony is a native breed to the New Forest in Hampshire. This strong and hardy breed can be found running loose in the area, but the ponies are actually owned. Among horses and ponies, the New Foresters have an interesting story.

Pony for Sale – History

It is thought by many that this breed can be dated back to the year 1016. During this time, rights of common pasture were given to the people that were living in royal hunting ground. Blood from Arabs and Thoroughbreds has been introduced to this breed every now and then for their speed, height and looks.

Horses and Ponies – Appearance

Generally, these ponies for sale have an upper height limit of about 14.6hh and are never below 12hh. The body is solid with muscular hindquarters. Shoulders are sloped and deep, joints are strong and hooves are solid. This breed is most commonly found in bay, chestnut and grey. However, there are other colours too.

Today

Nowadays, the New Forest pony is ideal for show jumping and gymkhanas. Although many people think the ponies found in the New Forest are feral, this is not true. They are actually owned by people with common grazing rights known as “commoners”. They pay a fee to keep them turned out every year. The ponies are looked after.
