•    As the name may suggest, the Kerry Bog pony has played an important role in Irish culture for a number of years as a hard working breed originally used to haul peat from the bogs in the region, as well as for general work tasks around farmsteads in the Kerry area.

•    Sadly, the very existence of this old Mountain and Moorland breed has been threatened in recent years, but dedicated steps have been taken to conserve and revive this historic breed of Irish horses. After an extensive preservation project in the 1990’s run by a determined local, John Mulvihill, the breed now number around 400+.

•    In terms of appearance, the Kerry bog pony is smaller than many other Irish horses and ponies for sale, including the Connemara pony. However, it is no less hardy – in fact the general temperament and versatility of the breed are enough to rival many larger breeds. The colouring of these Irish ponies tends to vary from black to bay to grey. Significantly, patched colours and unusual markings are accepted with this breed type.

Today, the ponies are mostly bought as companion animals, although they can be shown and driven by both children and adults.
