How to teach your horse to Spanish Walk

How to teach your horse to Spanish Walk

Here's our guide to how to teach your horse to Spanish Walk in 5 stages:

1. To start the Spanish walk we start in hand and ask the horse to lift up one leg at a time like a jambet by tapping gently with the whip on his foreleg and giving a reward.

2. When the horse shows some sign of lifting his leg, we persist with this until he can lift each leg outstretched.

3. Then we walk on and do the same again a few times then change onto the other foreleg and repeat.

4. When the horse can lift either leg on command and walk on then we ask for alternate legs and this becomes the Spanish walk.

5. When this is achieved in hand then we can move onto ridden work and still ask in hand but with a rider on board then gradually the rider takes over the commands giving gentle rein and leg aids.
