Horse Show PreparationHow to Prepare for a Horse Show Wednesday 12 May 2010
When going to a horse show you are full of hope that you will wow the judge as soon as enter the ring. If you want to make this dream a reality this article will tell you a bit about how to prepare your horse for a horse riding show.
Giving your horse the flawless finish he deserves is essential if you are going to maximise your chances of success at a horse show. Turnout is everything even if you are being judged on riding ability. You will rarely find a winner that isn’t well presented.
Preparation for Horse ShowsAdvanced planning is key if you want to succeed at a horse riding show. You will need to do as much preparation as you can in the few days before the horse show. Horses that win have careful behind the scenes plans and an immense amount of effort is put in to get the horses looking so fantastic.
It doesn’t matter if you are attending a local horse show or a county level horse riding show; appearance is everything. It looks much better to be moved up the line when a judge gives your horse a closer examination than be moved down due to lack of attention to detail.
When you are preparing for the horse show you should put yourself in the judge’s shoes and think about what they are looking for.
Confirmation – This is the way in which the horse is put together, there should be no obvious skeletal faults that could restrict his movement. If your horse is entered for a showing class then the judge might penalise unsightly blemishes, lumps and scars which ruin the overall look of the horse.
Movement – This is also called Cadence and is the action and expressiveness of the horse in different gaits. The movement of a horse should be straight and fluid. The judge will also look for good manners and composure despite the noise and distractions of a horse show.
Presentation – This is what you really need to work on. If a judge assesses a class and finds three horses with the same movement and configuration then all comes down to the presentation. The horse that has presence will be the one that wins over the others.
