The Horse Guards Parade is a parade ground in central London. Before its current function it was previously the site of the Palace of Whitehall’s tiltyard where Henry VIII held tournaments. Queen Elizabeth I also used the area for her birthday celebrations.

Now the Horse Guards Parade London is used for parades and ceremonies and has been since the seventeenth century. The British army once had their Headquarters there. The London Horse Guards Parade Ground is still the site of the annual ceremony of Trooping the Colour to celebrate the queen’s birthday.

Surprisingly enough towards the end of the twentieth century the London Horse Guards Parade was used as a car park but luckily this ended in the 1990s.

On the west side the parade ground is open and faces Horse Guards Road and St James’s Park. To the south are the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the rear wall of 10 Downing Street.
