Bedding for Horses
Tuesday 13 April 2010
Horse bedding is very important in making sure that you have a happy and healthy horse. It is essential that you do not let your horse stand on wet or hard stall floors, bedding for a horse gives them an extra cushioning and dryness so that their hooves can stay healthy and uninfected. A horse’s bedding also provides warmth and traction so your horse doesn’t find himself slipping about.
You can buy some excellent bedding for a horse which helps to maintain all the important conditions for keeping your horse healthy. The traditional bedding of straw is still a very popular choice and providing it is changed regularly and is dust free straw makes excellent horse bedding. There is a disadvantage to straw however because it produces a lot of waste.
Sawdust is another popular choice of bedding because it helps to eliminate the spores which are often present in straw. Sawdust also has higher absorbency and cuts down on dust levels.
Characteristics of Good Horse Bedding
• You should buy horse bedding that absorbs urine better to reduce the amount of ammonia odour in the stall.
• The bedding should have low dust levels because a horse’s respiratory system is not built to cope with high levels of dust.
• The bedding should ideally be easy to clean up with as little waste as possible.
