History of the Highland Pony

The Highland pony has a fascinating history, as this guide to the pony breed explains.
History of the Highland Pony

The Highland pony has a fascinating history, constituting one of the three native pony breeds of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

This pony breed has been used as an agricultural workhorse for much of its history, but in the 21st century these ponies are more commonly used for trekking, pleasure and therapeutic riding.

Intelligence and docile in nature, the Highland has one of the best temperaments of all pony breeds. You can find out a little more about the history of the Highland pony in the guide below.

Highland Ponies: A Brief History

The Highland breed is renowned for its hardiness and versatility, and that’s perhaps unsurprising considering the early origins of this pony breed.

Highland ponies
first developed on one of the remotest and most rugged areas of the UK – the Scottish Highlands and Islands. Naturally, in order to survive and thrive on these islands, the breed had to adapt to living in an exposed environment where food and shelter was scarce.

Research suggests the ancestry of Highland ponies could outdate that of human inhabitants of the Highlands. Scientific research has unravelled fossil remains dating back to 60,000 BC indicating the presence of a small pony that evolved into the modern day pony breed.

Naturally, crossbreeding has resulted in new bloodlines over the centuries, but there’s little doubt that Highland ponies have a long and proud history. And that’s especially true in terms of their contribution to family and agricultural life hundreds of years ago. This pony was, and still remains, a fantastic all-purpose animal, popular with all the family for both general riding and more demanding work.

Fascinating, the Highland pony has even had a role to play in military warfare. It was famously used several times in battle during Jacobean times. Bonnie Prince Charlie is just one notable figure from history who opted to use Highland ponies in battle.
