The Highland Pony Society is a leading Not-For-Profit charity with strong links to the National Pony Society, with a passionate interest in preserving the distinctive Highland pony breed.

The society has five main aims:

1.    To preserve the purity of the Highland pony breed
2.    To promote the breeding of Highland ponies used for riding, farm work and show
3.    To encourage the use of superior brood mares and stallions
4.    To promote the interests of owners and breeders of Highland ponies
5.    To encourage the registration of pure breed stallions, mares and geldings


Highland Pony Society – Facts and Figures



-    Her Majesty The Queen is the society’s official Patron and also owns one of the largest Studs of Highland ponies in the country, found at her residence in Balmoral.

-    The Highland Pony is one of the two native breeds of the Scottish Highlands – therefore making it a hardy animal that’s well suited to the challenging climate of this particular region.

-    Highland ponies are generally dun in colour, but the society dictates that a pure Highland pony should have no white markings on the body bar a small star.

-    The tail and hair of a Highland pony should be left to its natural devices, flowing and untrimmed.

-    A pure Highland pony generally measures between 13hh to 14.4hh.

-    The average Highland pony will have a compact body with powerful quarters.
