Horse nutrition can seem complicated but it isn’t that difficult. There are some basic points you should know about feeding horses and the rest will fall into place. This article will teach you about horse feeds, horse supplements and some general information on horse nutrition.

You should start off with a healthy horse, however perfect your horse feeds are and however good your feeding programme is it will not work successfully until your horse is healthy. You should make sure that you have a regular worming and vaccination schedule in place before you begin changing your horse feeds.

Your horse’s teeth are also very important, if your horse’s teeth are uncomfortable or unevenly worn then you will find food wastage occurring. You should make an appointment with an equine dentist once every six months to make sure that your horse’s teeth are well looked after.

The next step to good horse nutrition is providing clean and fresh water throughout the day. Horses can drink between 20 and 50 litres of water per day. If you feed your horse dry feed then it will require more water than those on grass. If you exercise and work your horse regularly then you will also need to give him more water to replace the water lost through sweat.

A good rule to follow on horse nutrition is never to overfeed. You should only give your horse the amount of food it needs. If your horse competes in a high energy demand sport then you must feed your horse food that has high energy content like barley, corn or oats.

A balanced diet is essential when feeding horses and this will maximise your horse’s health and performance. Horse supplements can be used to avoid excesses, imbalances and deficiencies. You should always think about your horse as an individual and think about his needs when considering horse nutrition.
