Basic Horse Facts

 
A horse is thought of as adult at the age of 4. 
A female adult horse is called a mare and a male a stallion. 
A mother horse is called a dam and a father horse a sire. 
There are over 200 horse breeds in the world. 
A horse is generally over 14.2 hands high and anything smaller is generally classed as a pony. 
 

Horse Facts - Superstitions

 
 
Horseshoes are meant to be lucky. 
If you hang a horseshoe upside down then all the luck runs out. 
The luckiest horse shoe of all is one off of the hind leg of a grey mare. 
Grey horses are meant to be lucky when piebalds are unlucky. 
In Lincolnshire if you see a white dog you should be silent until you see a white horse. 
 

Horse Facts – Anatomy

 
 
Horses have 175 bones in their body. 
A horse’s hoof grows at a rate of 1cm per month. 
Most horse breeds have 18 ribs but Arabians have 17. 
Horses can see in two directions at once. 
It is almost impossible for a horse to be sick and if they manage it then their stomachs usually rupture soon after. 
 

Foaling Facts

 
 
A newborn foal’s legs are 90% of the size they will be when full grown. 
A foal will be able to stand one hour after being born.
Female foals are called a filly and males a colt. 
More foals are born between April 15 and May 15 than any other time. 
Mares usually foal during the night. 
If a mare notices people watching her foal she can stop foaling until the person goes away. 
Horses can give birth in as little as 15 minutes, if the labour goes on for more than an hour then something is really wrong.
