Basic Horse Facts• A horse is thought of as adult at the age of 4.
• A female adult horse is called a mare and a male a stallion.
• A mother horse is called a dam and a father horse a sire.
• There are over 200 horse breeds in the world.
• A horse is generally over 14.2 hands high and anything smaller is generally classed as a pony.
Horse Facts - Superstitions• Horseshoes are meant to be lucky.
• If you hang a horseshoe upside down then all the luck runs out.
• The luckiest horse shoe of all is one off of the hind leg of a grey mare.
• Grey horses are meant to be lucky when piebalds are unlucky.
• In Lincolnshire if you see a white dog you should be silent until you see a white horse.
Horse Facts – Anatomy• Horses have 175 bones in their body.
• A horse’s hoof grows at a rate of 1cm per month.
• Most horse breeds have 18 ribs but Arabians have 17.
• Horses can see in two directions at once.
• It is almost impossible for a horse to be sick and if they manage it then their stomachs usually rupture soon after.
Foaling Facts• A newborn foal’s legs are 90% of the size they will be when full grown.
• A foal will be able to stand one hour after being born.
• Female foals are called a filly and males a colt.
• More foals are born between April 15 and May 15 than any other time.
• Mares usually foal during the night.
• If a mare notices people watching her foal she can stop foaling until the person goes away.
• Horses can give birth in as little as 15 minutes, if the labour goes on for more than an hour then something is really wrong.
