Horsebox floor

Postby highwings on Tue Jul 22, 2008 10:08 pm

Hi,

Just lately I have been getting really paranoid about the floor of my horsebox. I keep having visions of the horses falling through the floor whilst going along the motorway etc!!!

It currently has a wooden floor with rubber matting on the top - the edge of the wooden floor at the back of the box (near the ramp) looks like it is starting to rot. It looks fairly simple to replace and it is only a little 3.5ton lorry.

Is it possible to do this yourself or better to get a proffessional to do it?

I know you can get different types of flooring as well (wood, aluminum etc) but does anyone know roughly how much it is to replace a floor?

Many thanks

Charlene

Phone around and get quotes. don't necessary go for the cheapest though as not always the best but at least you will know you aren't getting ripped off. for example if you phone 6 people up and get 3 people saying £600, 1 person saying £1200 and 2 people saying £900 then you will have a guide line of it being between £600 and £900. (the figures aren't real figures) if someone charges you over double what majority of people quote then you are probably getting ripped off. you could also maybe ask where horse transporters get their lorries done. i would definately go for an alluminium floor though as it's less likely rot.

A lady at our yard was quoted around £1800 for a new Aluminium floor in her 7.5 tonne horsebox.  Dunno if that is any help to you whatsoever :D

Like has been said, best to get a few quotes no matter what you have done, with full information about what they are actually going to do.

Definitely get it done if you feel it's gone spongy and rotten.  A horse came onto our yard recently, her back leg had gone through the floor of a rubbish trailer that the new owners had rented and it also started to go through at the front.  Luckily she hadn't been happy to stand in the box with the partition up so was able to pull her foot back through with just a few scrapes on her leg.  It would have been horrific if she hadn't been able to move over.
