would you buy a horse that the owner said had once had laminitis

Postby loving-home-to-give on Mon Apr 02, 2007 10:05 pm

going to look at a horse that sounds perfect in everyway, however the owner said that she wanted to be honest and last year she nitrogened her field and he had a touch of laminitis. Should I be concerned?

any advice please

if you like the horse and feel you are suited and are willing to take the right precautions, it could be a good buy. if you like the horse, get them vetted and talk to the vet and see what they say about it, see if they feel it may be a problem in the future. it might seem to be a nightmare to deal with to start with, but once you get into a routine and are used to it, it shouldnt seem too bad. at least the owner is honest with you from the start, could come out much later :) just need to have the correct maintenance for it :D

but if it was only one occurrance when the fields have been fertilised, surely this could be avoided again? if its only a minor case of lami if owner and yard owner keep on top of it, keep to unfertilised bald paddocks, strict diet etc, surely it can be prevented? ive seen horses that have been slightly laminitic reman sound and be used regularly :) just see what the vet says, as if you decide you like the horse and get it vetted, this will be taken into consideration as whether the horse is suitable for purpose :)

hehe i can see im just going to dig myself a hole, suppose im used to the hassle of horses from being on the yard a lot of the time with my friends horses, mines easy, so it doesnt seem too much hassle. ill blame it on over dose of strepsils, ive already doubled the stated dose, cant even spell the word first time anymore :P, and it said dont lol :D but hey, its only vitamin c...and a few other lovely ingredients...)

i suppose it depends on your set up and if you have delt with a lamanitic pony before. There is someone in our village with a shetland who is prone to laminitus and she is tethering him out for a couple of hours but she is putting him on good grass as my grazing is pants and have my bedtime/winter area  i am contemplating letting him come to me in the hope he could go out with my boys as he will stand and shout all the time he is out as he is lonely :(..do you think i would be wrong?

I wouldn't advise to buy a horse that has had laminitis-there are far too many good ones out there- There are lots of questions to ask though and I wouldn't advise to get something with a problem- think of the vets bills etc- however laminitis is also a management issue- has the pony been fed too much hard feed? been ridden on hard roads a lot?- ie concussion related. Has it been shod well to support the heels?.....Maybe it would be an idea to seek the advice of your vet...
