laminitis in welsh cobs

Postby dillon on Fri Jun 16, 2006 6:00 pm

we have a welsh cob that developed concussive/stress related laminitis, it is now getting very difficult to keep him sound, especially with his welsh cob action which keeps triggering it off again, we tried silicone pads on the feet which were no help at all, despite them have very good reports - has anyone else had any success with these on a laminitis horse? has anyone had much success feeding the no-bute type solutions? any other suggestions?

a welsh b at our yard gets v bad lami (had it all this winter!!!!) She had x rays done and is now wearing heart bar shoes which have helped so much! She also gets no hay now. She gets 3 feeds of hi-fi lite and seems to be coming along. The shoes have helped alot, she is now sound enough to go short hacks and is loosing the excess weight slowly but surely. (she doesnt get any turnout tho :( )

Thanks very much for the asprin suggestion, this sounds an interesting one, which I may try, how many asprin did you give in each feed and approx how long does it take to have an effect? Thanks

there only around 24p each but that does mount up! i would say use asperin because it cheaper but ACP's will help calm him down while in

Hello aspin works via thinning the blood and also effects blood clotting time  should the horse have a wound so aspin should be used with caution ,acp is a tranquilizer which is not anti inflammatory .

What is the stress caused by which leads to laminitis.

Depending how much rotation that has taken place with in the hoof capsule the toe needs to be taken short and the heels may need lowering with out over pulling the dig tendon to much to get the pedal bone back on the correct axis .

Standing in a thick bed of shavings will help support the sole but if you know the cause of the stress that starts the problem there are ways to help eliminate the stress and the stress symptoms that lead to laminitis .

Best wishes to you .

Always school your horse with an open mind.

Hi there as far as laminitis goes i have not had much experience but i have evented a horse off buteless and found it very effective. The horse had an old injury that only effected her now and then. The buteless was just to make sure i didnt catch her on an off day. I would recomend it as an alternative to bute but in the specific case of laminitis i dont know how relevant a treatment it would be. Sorry if this is vague and i hope you find a way of managing your horses condition soon.
