advice please

Postby Plumbum on Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:27 pm

Hi I'm new here and I'm lookin for a little advice I'm lookin to buy my 1st horse but not 100% what to get? I used to only ride bareback but that was nearly 20 years ago, so have been having refresher lessons but I am still a novice  I am 5"8 and weigh 10st. But I also want to be able to teach my children to ride on it, any suggestion on size of horse or breed would be helpful. Thanks :D

My advice here would be a traditional cob type. They are sensible headed, comfy to ride for various riders and little goes wrong with them. They won't take you winning at BSJA or round badminton but they get the job done and tolerate a lot of riders. Look at age range around 10 years, nothing under 8. They can also be very successful in the local show ring.

Haflingers are a lovely build but they are a big shetland. If you have a nice easy going one then they will work well for you but they are stubborn and strong willed. They like their own way so just be careful. If you like it first time, try it out in various situations and ask for a trial. Obviously every individual horse is different but generally a haffy is a big shetland with the attitude and strength. But i also know some lovely examples of the breed so keep an open mind. Also take an expert along who is impartial that can give an honest opinion and put thing in perspective for you.
