feeling guilty

Postby cobsrule23 on Mon Dec 05, 2011 1:46 am

i am feeling extremely guilty as i am thinking about selling my horse, he was meant to be "Easy to do" but has turned out to be a bit of a handful (nothing nasty just general young horse/cobs kevins!) he is now doing better but after my last fall i feel i no longer have the confidence to bring on a youngster anymore, i do love him and i know i could get there someday, but as i am a student who is hoping to move out/get own car etc i know i only have a few years of horse ownership left, and i want to be able to enjoy them and just be able to go out and do things i have dreamed of such as the beach, riding club, pleasure rides maybe some local shows

do you think it would be fair for me to sell him? as i would worry he would get passed around? he is nothing a confident experienced person couldn't make into a star, i just feel im not the right owner for him (he has welsh in him and needs a bit of bossing sometimes!)

he is a 5 1/2 year old cob (not sure on ratio just got told has welsh in him!) ive hacked him alone and in company and he is ok but needs a confident rider, better in company, ive just started to get lessons on him so really only starting proper schooling but he can w/t/c easily just working on responsiveness, working properly etc now, his main love is jumping, and having seen him jump a 7 bar gate i can say he has quite a pop in him although i have never desired to jump high! he needs a confident experienced rider as he is young and although he is quite quiet in the school he will occasionally take the pee if he thinks he can get away with it - do you think he would said in this market or am i just living in dream world thinking i could sell him and get something i could do my dreams with?

I think deep down you know that maybe you two are not the right combination together, no-one will or can tell you what to do but if things were right you wouldn't have these thoughts in the first place.

If you do sell him then be honest with the buyer. It takes more to admit your not right together, you see some people and its so obivious their not happy, the horse isn't happy and they just keep going on. Its so sad.

When you go to buy any horse again ask your instructor to go with you, i'm sure they would jump at the chance of a bit of horse shopping! :)

I dont think you should feel guilty. From what you have said it would be worse if you kept him. I dont wish to sound unkind but a 5 and a half year old horse is never going to be an 'easy to do' horse at that age they are at the begining of their education and 99% of young horses I know of need a confident rider. I hope you find you perfect horse as I dont think (from what you have said) he is right for you.

yeah i think you are right, but at this time of year good horses are barely selling let alone ones that need bringing on? and i would need to make what i bought him for to get another one?

Hi , don't feel guilty as not every horse and rider will get on and as for being passed around he is still your horse so i someone you did'nt like or did'nt think would get on with him made a offer you don't have to sell him to them .
Good luck

Don't feel guilty, there are plenty of people who are confident riders that would love a little challenge and to bring on a youngster.

I agree with most of the posts here. You really should not feel guilty if you have determined that what you are doing is really best for you and the horse you are selling.
