who else puts 4 rugs on there horse?

i have a 24yr veteran mare show mare who is currently blanket clipped and in full work ( you wouldnt think she was 24 ! no stiffness at all ! )

but gets cold easilly so has these rugs on:-

stable rug med weight full neck
duvet on top with surcingle
a aspen combo ontop of them with full neck
and a lighter med weight turnout rug with full neck

and sometimes a lycra hood to keep her main flat and shiny



i personally dont think this is too much, she never sweats up under the rugs and some times when turned out shivers and stands at the gate wanting to come in ( esp in the snow )
she has a nice shiney coat and seems to love been snug.


what does anybody else use?

I own a cob who is not clipped at the moment as is still wearing three rugs. He wears two light/med weight and a heavy weight. He is prone to losing weight and i feel this is the kindest thing for him. He never over heats and he stays lovely and toasty till morning! Every horse is different - i know cobs who barely need a fleece on!

The 27 year old mare (yes really!!) I occasionally ride at our riding school has two stable rugs and a double duvet on! She is clipped (hunter I think - can't remember!) and they say she feels the cold a bit now she's older so I'm thinking a heavy duty duvet is prob equivalent to a couple of rugs!!

My husband laughs when he see's my horse with a duvet on and thinks I molly cuddle her. I am so glad to hear that someone else does the same. I just think if I was standing in a stable all night your bound to get cold.
My mare is clipped and she as 3 rugs & a duvet on and I even turn her out with a rug under her rug. It's only like wearing a jumper under your coat.
