To loan or not to loan that is the question

Postby Molly chops on Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:41 am

Has anyone had any good loaning success stories as everyone I speak to tend to say "horses are to be bort and sold only and not borrowed".  I have had 2 unsuccesful loaning stories one being the loaner & one the loanee (if that is a word)

My first horse was loaned a lovely 15.2hh mare but 3 days after arriving she went lame with a swollen hock.  The owners came out and said oooo she always gets that it is just cause she is not used to being in.......To cut a long story short she fell on the road and went for an x-ray to find she had a fracture in a hock and the owners tried to claim off my insurance....but my insurance dug around and found that she had been kicked in that same leg 3 weeks before I had her on loan.

I bought my own horse and after a few years I feel pregnant so decided to put her on loan.  I had a lovely girl come and decided to draw up a contract and let her have her on loan.  4 months later I get a phone saying she has got strangles and I am to get her off the yard straight away or they were going to dump her on the moors.  They were worried about the yard being closed as all there poines were going down to the Royal welsh in a weeks time (all potentially carrying a diesaes how irresposible).  They said she must have had the diease before (even though she was at home on her own) & the vet that examined her said Cheshire is notorous for strangles and she must have already had it (idiot).  £350 vets bill later she is ok.

What I am getting at is I am wanting to buy a youngster who I have set my heart on.  She is only 2 and wanted her to be at home in my stable and they have said I can have her on loan over the summer to decide.........I dont know what to do..........

I have loaned my boy out 3 times and its always been fine, I always kept in strong contact with the loanee

I have also loaned and havent had any issues - Always with a well drawn up contract and I have never loaned far away always in the local Ish area - Also the people that I have loaned to have always been known.

When I was a Loanee it was all fine to if its a loan with a view to buy just make sure that you have everything written down including buying price - Dont have a youngster on loan to do work with so they can charge more as its been handled
