Postby perfectpalominos on Tue Feb 17, 2009 7:46 pm

Hi guys only me!

Just wondered if any of you had any showing secrets that you were willing to share with me? Anything to do with ring craft under saddle or in hand. I will be showing Monty and my minature in hand this season and then after may hopefully under saddle with Monty! :w00t: Do any of you have any top tips?? Also Monty is palomino as you know and my minature is bay you got any tips for their coats?

Many thanks
:D

chalk is good for white socks, those snuggy hood/neck covers are good for getting a mane to lie flat overnight if you wash and dampen first:D.Vaseline or baby oil is good lightly rubbed around the eyes and nosey:P.Baby wipes in your pocket to wipe a grassy mouth if like our mare they need a quick chomp while waiting to go in the ring:w00t:.I find a quick lunge in the morning gets the sillies and exuberance over with before going to a show)

I always carry a 'clicker' with me when showing In Hand so if Moo is having a 'lazy' moment (he has a habit of dropping off while we wait for everyone to do their individual pieces) a quick couple of clicks usually gets his attention back to the job in hand )

Nope, to be honest we kept getting marked down because of his laziness and at the time we were using clicker training with our spaniel pup, a friend joked that maybe it was worth using the clicker with Moo, tried it and success!

clean clean and clean some more you can never be to clean :hehe: :hehe: i scrub my tack with a tooth brush.... also smile like this :D the whole time you are in the ring ....as you enter the ring try and be between to less talented or poorly turned out horses  this with help yours to stand out.....keep your show basic ...halt ..walk on both reins ..trot on both reins ...canter on both reins...i always inclued a gallop ...but i choose what ever side on the area that is flat or slightly uphill ...(if behind the ride is down hill canter behind and push on up the side instead :) ) then a halt at the end of your show . judges hate to stand and watch a 10min show they get bored 2or 3 mins is plenty... if the go wrong when riding your show just carry on and make it up as you go along ...as the judge didnt know what you had planned anyway so no harm done :) teach your horse to stand still in the line up and judges really take note of that.... wear the right outfit or tack for the right classes ie tweed for hunter classes ect

bays can be as hard to get clean as greys! If you dont succeed then can look a little 'greeny'

i use 'animal shampoo' which has pink label. it gets everything out!! once washed out & sweat scraped i spritz showshine on. wait till dry, brush then show shine again and wipe over with cloth or sheepskin mit. manes & tails i wash with shampoo then condition with tresemme!

with white socks, after a bath, mix chalk powder with water into a paste, paint on & bandage till morning, where you can take bandages off at show & white down - voila!!

I had a pony allergic to baby oil, so i use aloevera baby oil now on knees, hocks, muzzle & minimal around around eyes and jaw line :)

Cut the corners off you number to make it look more oval.

Make sure you use the right bit... and accessories, eg/ rugby pelham should have a slip head.

White and feathers - Vosene!!! I swear by it and have plant of white bits and lots of feathers!!!

Trim beards about a week before show - so the dont look freshly trimmed.

Feet should also be manicured, even if you cant see much of them...

Always enter the ring on the right (as opposed wrong) rein, can never remember which this is, so im sure someone will enlighten me.... I just tend to follow!!!

Dont be afraid to circle to find more space.... Or go into the corners more!!!

Really get your horse to at least try to extend whilst changing the rein in trot - judges remember this, even with hairy cobbies!!!

Im sure i'll remember some more in a bit!!!

yeah when the steward asks you to change rein i push for med trot aswell :) thats my horse party trick ....she moves on beautifully :) what kind of classes are the thinking of entering ? also my friend (who wins everything with her coloured) wears a small hand picked rose/ bud  (fresh from her garden) pinned on her tweed jacket  . If all else fail buy the judge a glass of wine or two :)
