Do You Come From A Horsey Family?

Postby TallyHo on Sat Dec 27, 2008 10:29 am

I don't :(

When I was a kid, I never went to any family occasions like weddings, parties etc because I only wanted to be at the farm with my pony. I don't ever remember my parents helping/taking part/showing interest in a single thing I did with my pony. Ok, they funded it, but I had to go to the farm on my bike and get on with things.

Whenever I was expected to attend any function, my mum would make excuses for me and say "Oh, she won't go, she won't leave that flippin' horse. Eeeeee, I don't know where she's got it from. . . ." as if it was some kind of illness :hehe:

Morning TH )  Hope you've had a good Christmas.

I come from an animal loving family, but not a horsey one.

My parents couldnt afford to buy me a horse, but my dad, bless him, used to come to riding lessons every week with me (he would be in my lesson with me! He got quite good :hehe: ) and they paid for me to go on horsey holidays and stuff and would take me to the local donkey santuary at 8am every Sunday so I could do my mornings volutary work.

Since I have had Chigs, both mine and Mr SB's families absolutely adore him and come to visit with carrots and the suchlike, but they dont ride.  They are all enjoying getting to know horses, they go around the yard chatting to them all and their owners :)

SB I Hate Christmas, but I survived it so I guess that's a result :P Thank you for asking :)

My parents were animal lovers but just never showed any remote interest. I hacked to shows, won rosettes and they seemed to think they were given out at the entrance or exit :w00t:

I always tell Katie she doesn't realise how fortunate she is, not only that both parents do horse related business, but that she competes on good horses, has all the best stuff for them and it's all paid for :w00t:

My family are not horsey at all! In fact even now all I get is grief from mine, my gran even accused me of paying more attention to my horses than my kids (not true by the way but close!) :hehe:

When I was a kid I used to work at a riding stables from 8am to 8pm plus pay them £7 for a half hour ride! I loved it though and went everyday in the holidays and weekends ) After that I used to ride all the nutcase ponies that no one else wanted to ride, loved that to! Even rode one that had no tack at all, he was a monkey and used to do flying bucks in canter, god knows how I used to ride him in just a head collar and 2 lead ropes :w00t: I wish I could get that confidence back. I moved on to getting paid to ride other peoples horses until family pressure made me give that up and get a 'proper' job. When I had saved enough dosh I brought a pony for my kids and since then I have owned my own horses. They keep getting more and more expensive though! Before Ellie I hadn't paid more than £1000 for a horse, I would usually take ex-racers straight from the track and reschool them before selling them on. I don't even have the bottle to do that anymore!

Even now none of my family (except my kids) are supportive of what I do, they would never dream of coming to a show. Even hubs moans all the time about the time I spend with my horses

Nope. Dad always used to say he'd buy us a little one but it never came to anything.

My eldest sister used to be at a boarding school and she rode with them but I never had any lessons or spent any time around horses, other than when I visited a 'friend' with a pony but even then she wasn't interested in it and wanted to play with dolls (yuk!)

When I was 16 I started going out with a bloke 7yrs older than me :w00t: . He worked at a trout farm and the owner had this horse in his field that nobody did anything with. My bf suggested that I started riding it, so I did!

2yrs later I bought him, then bought a landrover and trailer and took myself off to competitions. Mum used to always love hearing about what I'd been doing but I never got any support from her (mum and dad had divorced by now and dad worked abroad so never saw him).

Even now she absolutely loves hearing about what I've been up to with Splash and loves seeing photos but she's never met him (lives 300miles away!). She keeps saying if she had the money she'd buy me a yard. Oh if only eh?!

Now I've got a bf who is totally uninterested in horses but will come along to take photos, as that is his hobby!

Yes :)

Horses have been in my family for over 100 years and most of my great great great etc grandparents were blacksmiths and stuff like that.

My mum and dad HATE horses with a passion. It was my nan who got me into it :D

Nope! I thought I was the first, but since getting into it I've learned that my Dad's Mum's Dad was a veterinary Farrier (my great grandad) so my Nan is chuffed for me - although she never rode, she just remembers being around racehorses when she was a child. My brother has started riding recently too :D

But when family & friends come to visit us I don't understand how they don't feel the urge to go & see the horses that are in my back garden :w00t:

Kind of! Well my mum and dad dont but my aunty and cousin does and my other aunty used to. My parents used to take me to my riding lessons that my aunty paid for then they did the same when i moved schools but they funded it, they dont have much interest but pay for my loan horse but they might muck out my stable if i am lucky and mum quite likes grooming,

Eat, sleep, ride and friends - need nothing more in life, the simple pleasures!

My mum has always been interested in horses, and bless her bought a colt for me when she found out she was pregnant. The funny thing is though i always took it for granted. I didnt really get properly into riding untill i was about 12, so Gizmo's best years had been wasted. There was always a pony there and i never had to struggle to see him or anything, and didnt want to ride becuase i didnt know how lucky i was.

I think you can appreciate horses a lot more when you have to work to get them and look after them. Although my dad has land, he absolutely hates me keeping my horses on his fields! So i can understand from both points of views :)

My parents were not horsey and could not afford to buy me a horse when i was young, i therefore got my horsey fix by helping out at the local riding stables, riding friends horses and going on riding holidays. I worked two jobs to save for my first horse. My dad has no interest in my horses and my mum likes them but is scared.

My daughter, however has grown up with horses and rode with me before she was even born :w00t::w00t: She got her very own pony when she was 8 (old enough to muck out by herself - lol) and has had a horse ever since.
God forbid that i should go to any heaven in which there are no horses, one day Impy we will meet again......

Kinda

My mum has always loved horses and used to ride until she was pregnant with me, she then took time out to raise us and then "gave me the reins" so to speak. She comes and watches me whenever I ride though and loves making a fuss of all the neds. When I eventually get my horse, she'll deffo be involved in it all.

My dad loves them too, but he's never ridden. He used to really want to be a farrier though.

And my surname is Smith - so you never know if there was a blacksmith in there somewhere :P

Sort of my family arent but My dad married my step mom who is. Both my step sisters had horses but I couldnt. My step mum did however start off my riding lessons.

After that i rode once a week did all yard duties etc. Desperate for my own i asked every year to no avail.

I met a horse that i rdoe for the summer when i was about 15 and i lvoed him. He was sold one day and I didnt get to say goodbye. I started riding an ex racer that loved to buck but promptly stopped as he wasnt my paddy. I gave it all up then

Shame I had been learning to jump and do dressage and had nerves of steal back then :)

When i was 22 i started going out with a guy that relished in telling me i was fat and needed to exercise ( I can hear you all screaming ****) which he was. But its becauseof this I found my solace in horses again whilst apeasing him. I started lesson then part leased then got all excited after a 24 year wait and bought Harmonie :)

my family arn't horsey but they 'became' horsey when i started riding,

when i had my ponies/horses they came to shows (dad drove the lorry) my mum would help me out with jobs @ the yard and she would bring in or put them out if i was ill or had too much school/college/uni work to do:D
