Thrush treatment

Postby sonialf on Wed Mar 23, 2011 10:03 pm

Hi! I've just discovered that my boy has got thrush (thanks to some very muddy fields this winter). I've been told to clean the hoof with diluted hibiscrub twice a day, however, I'd appriciate any advice on other treatments you may have out there.
Thanks x

you can buy a product called thrush buster, really get down the lateral and central clefts of the frog, also while keepin the foot extra clean it is also important to keep the bedding clean and dry, trying not to alow your horse to stand in a wet bed as this can also cause the problem. Thrush is an anerobic bactera ( which means it thrives without oxygen so once exposed to air it dies) hope this helps.

I advised a penpal whose mule had the same problem to wash the soles of the feet in warm water and apply neat tea tree oil a few times. It cleared it up within a few days.

Hi, I found a product a while back called FROG WELL I think it was from www.sweetitch.net worked a treat. After all that mud a few months back I had the same problem with my horse. It cleans and soothes the sole and frog, contains tee tree and cider vinegar which adjusts the PH balance. Really cheap think I paid £6.00 for it. I used to use purple spray but it didn't seem to stick that well.. Just a thought .. Jo

My sisters' mare is prone to thrush so we treat it often. The best thing for it is Hydrogen Peroxide 3% - 5% which you can get from any chemist for about 99p. You thoroughly wash the frog and inner walls of the foot with water (or diluted hibiscrub, followed by a thorough rinse) then pour or spray over the entire inner hoof with enough of the peroxide to see a bubbling and fizzing. It's quite fun really!

Don't get it on your hands (I wear latex gloves) but you don't need to rinse it off the hoof after, just leave it to work its' magic! It should make a marked difference, you can repeat every week if necessary.
