Dumb question, but.....

Postby Widge85 on Thu Dec 31, 2009 8:07 pm

So this may sound a thick question but am looking for a new 4 x 4 and looking at tow weights, is your tow weight as simple as weight of trailer and horses?

e.g. Ifor 510 weighs 800kg + Jack 750kg and Charlie 600kg = 2150kg tow weight? as most seem to be only able to pull 2tonne, some 2.5 at the top end and the defender a massive 3.5tonne, but I find it really hard to believe that some of the big 4 x 4's aren't capable of towing a trailer with 2 horses, so wondering if there is a different way tow load is calculated?

Speak to the trailer seller! They'll happily explain it BUT essentially most 4x4 can NOT legally tow a trailer with two decent sized horses. I think when I checked we established that my Terrano could tow a trailer with two 600kg horses but nothing extra like water, etc. It's partly the reason why we decided to buy a box. I'm not happy to tow at the upper end of the legal limit especially not with something live in the back and very little (none!) towing experience!! :D
