Cubbing??

Postby xxrefsonxx on Sat Aug 09, 2008 6:30 pm

Hi everyone :D

My friend was telling me about a thing called cubbing which apperntly is like hunting but not as fast and furious!! I've never heard of it! I've never been hunting before and really want to, my dad (again!!) thinks its unsafe (he's sooooo overprotective!!)!

Has anyone ever been cubbing as is there much difference between cubbing and hunting??

Is it fun :P :w00t:

thanks x

Traditionally, Cubbing was the early season meets when the foxes were still immature and it was meant to get the young hounds ready to hunt after the season started properly. It was fairly relaxed, lots of hanging about and not much galloping.

I don't think Cubbing is done since the ban on hunting with hounds

Hiya. Cubbing is no longer refered to widely as cubbing, with most Foxhound packs preferring to call it "Autumn Hunting". They still do do Autumn Hunting, which usually starts, as soon as the crops (wheat, barley and oats, round here) have been harvested, and there are stubble fields. Some Hunts are about a week away from starting currently, and some are about 3 - 4 weeks away from going. It still follows a similar format to trad Autumn Hunting, with the mounted followers positioned around a "covert" (wood, patch of brambles/undergrowth, thick piece of hedge etc, etc) and is still used largely to teach young hounds their job, but also it helps to disturb litters of foxes, so they are forced to move further afield. You are still ruled by a field master.  It is usually an early start.....meets are often 6am. And it is usually a lot more sedate than actual hunting as such. There is a lot of standing about, and certainly at the beginning of the season, don't expect very much in the way of jumping, or 5 mile points, that usually creeps in later in the season, closer to the "Opening Meet" in about middle of October. Many people find Autumn Hunting boring beyond words. Usual hunting rules apply, such as, proper dress (tweed hacking jacketand etc, not blue or black coat) giving way to the Huntsman or Whip, turning your horse's rear end away from the hounds (never call them "dogs") as they pass (your horse kicking one of the hounds is still a cardinal sin), and obeying the Field Master's instructions is a must. Singing "Barby Girl" at the top of your voice when bored, is NOT to be encouraged, and will be frowned upon by most hunt staff and masters, as will practising next weeks dressage test!! Believe me it happens! And you are there to pay attention to what is going on, not discussing Corrie! You are supposed to say good morning to the Field Master, and good night!! when you leave. Don't be late to the meet, and don't make it so that the secretary has to chase you around for your cap/fee, you won't get away without paying, Secretaries are built like bloodhounds, they know exactly who they've had money from, and who not, its uncanny. Hope this irons out a few wrinkles for you. Why not give it a go?

TallyHo. LOL. It WASN'T me. Someone else. Dozy tart got bored, and Huntsman was FUMING. Not the jolliest of chappies at the best of times, and certainly not amused this day. And what's more she Got half of the mounted followers joining in. Needles to say, don't believe she ever went again. I wasn't around that day, just got told about it. But I'd've paid good money to have been there!:w00t:

I always thought that cubbing refered to hunting the babies, thank goodness I was wrong, hunting has never sat well with me and this was something I hated even more!

Not quite as no babies about then, juveniles yes, and they would thin them out. But of course it doesn't happen anymore.

Ours start on the 16th. Known as hound exercise.

i dont mind slobber, we went last year to the meet at a boys school - wont mention name as dont know if im supposed to - got in the middle of the hounds thought i was really clever and fuss them and let them jump up and slobber, well after they got down i realised i was covered in doggy doo as in the wagon they would have been treading in it all - the smell did not leave me all day!!!!!!!!!!!

i love autum hunting as i love early mornings and the pace is really nice and slow especially good if its your first time and if it is your horses first time too, ive been cubbing before the ban and they never caught one fox that season hee hee !!!!!!!!

CANT LIVE WITHOUT EQUINES :P this isnt me jumping just my horse
