Hi, in coloured classes they'r looking for straight movent good conformation, and also it's all about the markings! symmetrical markings, bold markings and plently of mane and feather tehe :P

Hope this helps a little bit!

In coloured in-hand/ridden classes they look for turnout of both the horse and rider, correct tack, a good forward movement with straight action, correct conformation and an obedient, well schooled horse that listens to it's rider/handler.

Unfortunately markings don't really come into it.

If your horse is a native/traditional type then they need to be shown in their natural state eg. full mane, tail and feathers but if they are non-traditional (think more sport horse or very light cob) then they should be plaited up with feathers trimmed. For a show cob then they will need a hogged mane, pulled tail and feathers off.

I hope that helps.

I have a new coloured horse, bought 4 months ago, am I mad to start his showing at the BSPS13b show at Bridgewater this weekend? Or should I go somewhere a bit less smart for a first try. Will it be very professional there?

has he shown with his previous owners? if he has then he'll know what's to be expected of him.

Do you feel confident riding him and does he respond well to your aids in different situations (what's he like when you're around other horses or in a busy area?

If you have the correct turnout then there is no reason why you can't start your showing partnership there :D it will be a great place to observe others who are experienced competitors, ask questions and learn a lot!

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Thanks Dapplegrey for the encouragement. He has been shown before but is only 4yo and I haven't for 25 years! I'm planning to be scrubbing all day tomorrow, have even ditched hunting. Must be crazy.
